Our Mission

Established in 1999, the Boomerang Theatre Company is dedicated to producing new, classic and neglected plays that add to the vibrancy of the national theatre canon. We annually present original and re-imagined plays as both outdoor performances and indoors rotating repertory seasons.

"We challenge artists as they continue to hone their craft, and we engage the most talented and passionate writers, directors, designers and actors in New York's independent theatre community."

By employing an innovative philosophy and a pioneering spirit, Boomerang constantly expands the idea of what is possible for an Off-Off Broadway/Indie Theatre company. Through this unique combination of substance and form, we move our audience by creating for them a dialogue of culturally significant plays from diverse styles, genres, and periods.

Our History

The Boomerang Theatre Company is an award-winning Off-Off-Broadway theatre company based in New York City.

Boomerang annually produces a season composed of three programs:

  • Free outdoor Shakespeare productions in parks throughout NYC.
  • An indoor repertory series of new, classic and neglected plays.
  • The FIRST FLIGHT New Play Festival, a development event with workshops and readings of new plays.

In the past seventeen years, the Boomerang Theatre Company has produced 58 full productions, including eleven world premieres, six New York City premieres and reinvented producing in repertory for small theatres. In 2008, the company was the recipient of the Caffe Cino Fellowship from the New York Innovative Theatre Awards for consistent production of outstanding work. Boomerang has been awarded two New York Innovative Theatre Awards for Burning the Old Man by Kelly McAllister, and been nominated eight times in total. Boomerang also received a 2002 OOBR Award for The Misanthrope by Moliere, and was selected as a September 2005 recipient of The STAR Initiative from WNYC radio. The company also presented the United States premiere of Irvine ("Trainspotting") Welsh's You'll Have Had Your Hole in the NYC International Fringe Festival. Three plays produced by Boomerang have been published in annual Plays and Playwrights anthologies.

Through the FIRST FLIGHT festival, Boomerang has developed over 60 new plays through readings and workshops. We are honored to work with some of the most exciting emerging playwrights in America, including Johnna Adams, John Pielmeier, Sharyn Rothstein, Larry Kunofsky, Crystal Skillman, Adam Kraar, Bill C. Davis, E.M. Lewis, Mary Jett Parsley, Greg Romero, Colin McKenna, James Comtois, Zack Calhoon, Michael DeVito, Isaac Rathbone, Mike Folie and Rich Orloff.

Plays developed in FIRST FLIGHT have gone on to win awards and receive productions both with Boomerang and with other theaters across the country and around the world.
